PRR NGS – New Generation Storage

NGS – New Generation Storage strategic industrial agenda joins 54 partners working towards the development of a complete and fully circular battery ecosystem in Portugal.

The consortium will purposedly avoid working on current generation of batteries - an area where currently it is only possible to compete by investing billions of Euros – values that are difficult to access - and advance with Portugal’s current infrastructure and industrial ecosystem. Alternatively, NGS will focus on a distribution of project investment of 44% in technology development, followed by 53% in productive investment, avoiding falling into an investment trap and instead work in disruptive innovative technologies. NGS’s cornerstone is the strong confidence that through technology development and the creation of strong synergies between national players across the whole battery value chain, we will create an innovative and competitive battery ecosystem.

For the refinery sector, the developed technology – a novel electrolysis system – will allow the production of 25 000 ton of high purity lithium hydroxide that can lead to exports of 1500 M€/year at current LiOH spot prices and that has lower 300,000 ton of CO2/year emissions in comparison with a traditional LiOH refinery process.

NGS will also develop new cells and components, focusing on structural, flexible, and solid-state batteries, with highlight for novel structural sodium batteries that were first developed by consortium members together with the 2019 Nobel Prize winner Professor Goodenough, showcasing that the consortium is really at the state-of-the-art at developing novel and disruptive technology.
